Missions are meant to add the story aspect to history. They are also an adaptation of Civ 5's Social Policies but with a few tweaks.

Missions present challenges which the player may choose to undertake, and successful missions provide valuable rewards which replace civilization and leader traits, unique units and buildings, and other things to make each culture unique.

Missions unfold in a tree. Completing one mission opens the doors to others.
